Better, nicer, faster, more.
Nothing to do with asceticism.
When something that is useful, healthy and necessary for a person,
crosses the threshold and becomes harmful, toxic.
This is something we deal with almost every day.
When something is just too much. Lack of balance.
Workaholism, perfectionism.
Everything is good in moderation.
Moderation is the skill of not falling into extremes. Behavior, emotions, attachments.
Moderation is not abstinence, it is the search for a harmonious existence.
Our current society promotes the idea of having more as a virtue, as something that brings happiness.
Moderation is very often forgotten and ignored. More clothes, more friends, more pleasures, more money, more work, more sports, more learning, more achievement, more efficient, faster, etc.
All these things are not bad in themselves, many of them are healthy and necessary human needs.
But when they become inert, out of conscious control, they become unhealthy.
Perfectionism, workaholism, overeating, enjoyment of pleasurable activities, "shopaholism", alcoholism, addictions, etc. – each of us has experienced it or seen it in others.
Also, having seen or experienced the possible harmful consequences of such behavior.
Some of these extremes are praised and others condemned in our society.
Perfectionism and workaholism are good examples of what is praised.
It's great to enjoy your work, but if that's the only thing that excites you, other equally important, but more subtle and less obvious aspects of life get neglected.
On the other hand, it is like a scale in which we oscillate between extremes, through which we realize the importance of balance.
