BODIES
Duration 70 min.
Premiered 2022
The more technology takes over our daily lives, the more clearly we start to distance ourselves
from our own bodies. As the world is created and takes place in our thoughts, heads, eyes, we
forget and stop thinking about another essential part of us - the physical body. After all, only he,
together with mind and spirit, creates a person as a complex whole. Of course, we can talk about
the cult of the body - excessive attention to appearance, but the dance performance “Bodies” by
Marius Pinigis and Adrian Carlo Bibiano focuses on the body as an instrument that can speak
and express the inner thoughts of a person.
The dance performance “Bodies” is not based on a play, there is no dramaturgical line here, it
becomes an idea: bodily communication is irreplaceable. This thought raises the question of how
to awaken bodies, how to enable them to speak again? On the stage of the theater, actors usually
convey their thoughts in words, which we take as a reflection of intelligence. This time, the
artists recover the forgotten language that is hidden in each of us. Ten actors from different
generations step into trials and discussions about shared energy and the changes that occur
through communication. After all, dance is not only an attribute of a young person, it does not
end at a certain age limit and, even more so, it is not intended only for professionals.
Choreographer Marius Pinigis says: “I think that in a performance of any style or genre, it is not
always necessary to justify actions logically, after all, there is more irrationality than rationality
in our everyday life. If we look at our thoughts, we would not find smooth linear thinking, so
“Bodies” also consists of scenes based on images, open to the interpretation of the observer.
Dancers give directions, not specific situations and solutions.”
“Bodies” invites you to immerse yourself in visuality, not to overload your head with searches
for meanings and meanings, and even not to be afraid of not understanding.

Reviews
An impeccable stage rhythm is created in the performance "Bodies". The movements flow one after the other, the dancers seem to merge with each other and intertwine in simple compositions. Flowing without any interference, the performance lulls in a sacred calm like Renaissance paintings or the music of M. K. Čiurlionis. Sometimes it's even hard to believe that the actors are dancing and not professional dancers.

The performance "Bodies" is not in a hurry: in each scene, it is allowed to linger as it gradually transforms. Maybe that's why you have to stop yourself when writing a review – because you want to tell about every lingering feeling that is so deeply embedded in your body. To stop, I think about the costumes of the scenography and costume designer Arvydas Gudas, whose loose silhouettes create a separate relief of the performance as they move. I'm still thinking about music. The acoustic landscape created by Andrius Stakelė also acts like a body to which human bodies react. In my opinion, it is she who expands the performance to the reflections of collective memory with her audio archive. It reminds us of the genetically transmitted suffering of bodies, their fearfulness, insecurity, attachment to other bodies, with the aim of making the common body of all of us bigger and, as a result, more peaceful. I'm sure the creators didn't really claim to be a survey of 20th century history, but for me, the feel of these bodies – from the alertness and menace of those days to today's fatigue and stuck in low range of motion – told that story. Not as memories, but as images that stretch through the body like something familiar. Although maybe it didn't happen to us, it happened to completely others, in completely different times.
